The following works were featured in "Hidden
Paintngs of the South West", shown on 26th June
2011 (BBC1 South West) |
Schooner
in St Ives Bay
 |
St
Ives Harbour
 |
| During the programme the
paintings illustrated above were examined by three specialists.
Robert Jones (aesthetic), Jennifer Ridd (Fellow of
the British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers)
and AA&R (laboratory). To summarise, Robert
Jones expressed doubt, based on the unknown lighthose in the St
Ives Harbour painting, and seeming lack of 'ratlines' (rigging)
in the Schooner painting. Jennifer Ridd, with nearly fifty years
experience in painting conservation was adamant that both
paintings were authentic, the support on which both were painted
was found to be of the correct age. Finally, the AA&R
laboratory discovered two paint pigments which they believed
would not have been in use during Wallis's lifetime. The
discovery of these pigments (titanium dioxide and blue
phthalocyanine) would therefore seem to condemn both
paintings as copies. However, following extensive research some
important information came to light after the filming had been
completed, update coming soon... |
